Tokyo stocks open lower on profit taking

February 23, 2014

TOKYO, Feb. 24 -- (Kyodo) _ Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday as Wall Street losses and a pause in the yen's depreciation encouraged investors to lock in recent gains.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 61.89 points, or 0.42 percent, from Friday to 14,803.78. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 1.23 points, or 0.10 percent, to 1,221.08.

The soft opening came after the Nikkei scored this year's second largest gain of 416 points on Friday.
