Feb. 23--HARRISBURG -- You can now carry your proof of automobile insurance on your smartphone.

Sen. John H. Eichelberger Jr., R-Hollidaysburg, authored the legislation that went into effect Friday.

It makes two significant amendments to insurance sections of the state vehicle code:

* Pennsylvanians have the option to receive their automobile financial responsibility identification card from their insurer solely in electronic format. Drivers can then use a mobile device as a legally-acceptable way to show that proof of insurance to a police officer.

* The state requirement that policies with collision coverage include a $100 minimum deductible is eliminated.

"This is a measure that allows Pennsylvania insurance companies to offer options, such as 'vanishing deductibles,' that are available in other states," Eichelberger said.

"Their consumers have been anxious to take advantage of the latest technology and possibly save a little money."

The House and Senate unanimously had approved the measure (Act 132 of 2013) last year.
