TOKYO, Feb. 22 -- (Kyodo) _ (EDS: UPDATING)

The gaming unit of Sony Corp. launched the PlayStation 4 in Japan on Saturday, at a time when the electronics company is already seeing brisk sales of the home gaming console outside Japan.

The successor to the PlayStation 3 console, launched in 2006, carries a price tag of 41,979 yen, featuring enhanced connectivity with social networks and mobile phones.

Along with the new console, 27 software titles were launched in Japan, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.Japan became the last of 57 countries in which Sony is marketing the console, following its launch in such regions as North America and Europe in November.

The PS4 has seen favorable demand globally, with sales topping 5.3 million units as of Feb. 8, clearing the sales target of 5 million for the current business year ending next month, according to the company.

The pace of PS4 sales has been faster than that of its predecessor PS3, which sold 3.55 million units from its launch in November 2006 through March 2007.
