TROY, N.Y., Feb. 20 -- The Sage Colleges issued the following news release:
The Theater Institute at Sage will host a candid discussion with Rachel Maines, Ph.D. on Sunday, February 23 at 4:00 p.m. Maines, author of The Technology of Orgasm, will speak at the conclusion of the Sunday 2 p.m. performance of In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play). Dr. Maines' book served as the inspiration for the play and was a principal source of research for In the Next Room and the film Hysteria.
Maines is a visiting scientist at the Cornell University School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her work covers the history of technology, with specializations in needlework and the Industrial Revolution, asbestos and building codes, and the development of the vibrator in treating hysteria.
In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play) is a touching comedy that combines the miracles of electricity with a strange new instrument that treats female hysteria. As a doctor's wife tries to figure out the goings-on "in the next room" she confronts with her scientifically-minded husband feelings about intimacy and the body hitherto unexplored in their marriage. An instant classic, In the Next Room was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award nominee for Best Play. For dates and performance times visit sage.edu/theatre/.
Sunday's audience talkback will begin at 4:00 p.m. in Meader Little Theater on the Russell Sage campus and is free and open to the public.
