UAE - By 2017, it is estimated that half of the 3.4 billion smartphone or tablet users worldwide will be using m-Health apps. These apps will be one of the topics discussed at Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University (http://www.hbmeu.ac.ae/) 5th Health and Environment Conference "Transformation for Better Healthcare and Environment" on 3th - 5th March in Dubai.
m-Health apps are not likely to replace doctors' visits anytime soon, but they can supplement traditional healthcare in innovative and convenient ways.
Kenneth Seymens, chairman at conference panel "Real World Examples of Digital Health" has worked in the mobile health field for 25 years and sees m-Health as the future of care for those suffering from diabetes.
In the United Arab Emirates, the disease is of particular concern. One out of every four citizens has diabetes; by 2020, the cost to the healthcare system is estimated to rise to $8.52 billion.
The Sensei system, which Mr. Seymens is the first to bring to the Middle East, uses a Bluetooth-enabled glucose monitor and smartphone app to allow doctors and patients to manage their diabetes on-the-go.
Managing diabetes involves measuring insulin levels on a daily basis, taking medication and eating the right foods. In the past, this has involved regular doctor visits, combing through literature online to find the right foods to eat and hoping to remember to take medication.
Other panels at the conference "Transformation for Better Healthcare and Environment" will discuss how to improve healthcare quality, advances in hospital management and administration and current issues in health reform in UAE.
