MGIS Collaborates with Astute Doctor to Introduce Risk Management Program

February 16, 2014

An estimated 70-80 percent of malpractice litigation involves doctor-patient relationship or communication problems, which highlights the impact that good patient communications and interpersonal skills have on managing risk.

To help physicians maximize this key risk leverage point, The MGIS Companies, Inc. (MGIS), a provider of insurance products and services designed specifically for physicians, has partnered with Astute Doctor Education Inc., for it's new PREVENT education program.

According to a release, Astute Doctor Education Inc. is an independent provider of skills-development education and resources specifically designed for medical professionals. The partnership with Astute Doctor enhances MGIS' current risk management services provided through their partner, OmniSure Consulting Group, which help physicians manage risk. Astute Doctor's customized PREVENT program helps minimize the risk of malpractice litigation through eight CME-Certified web courses focused on improved doctor-patient communication and greater patient engagement. Upon completion, physicians receive CME accreditation made available through joint sponsorship of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Center for Continuing Education and Astute Doctor Education, Inc.

"While of course physicians must always focus on quality care and look for ways to improve it, it's also very important to consider the 'warm and fuzzy' side of the patient experience," said Jeff Brunken, president of MGIS. "We are excited to expand our risk management services and offer such a specialized education program that covers every step of the patient encounter. These courses will provide our physicians with critical soft skills they can actually use in their daily practice."

"The studies show that the ability of a doctor to communicate and relate to patients is a critical factor in reducing the risk of malpractice litigation. Interestingly, it is often not medical errors, but miscommunication, that leads to litigation," said Grant Simic, President, Astute Doctor. "We are thrilled to have MGIS as our partner and offer a true risk management tool that doesn't just reduce risk, but helps physicians build better relationships with their patients."

The online courses use an engaging format that includes case studies, interactive diagrams, visual models, and audio narrations to assist doctors in learning and retaining these new skills. This program helps build the communication skill set needed for the delivery of quality care to a diverse population of patients. These activities are approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
