"(Clements) just brought a wealth of information that will help us when we go to a scene," Hansel said. "Just about anything can happen. You drop (tragic) news on somebody, they could go hysterical or just faint."
Training also helps chaplains stay out of the way during investigations. Sometimes, the religious leaders are called into assist in an area that still might be an active crime scene.
In addition to helping console families dealing with losses, chaplains often are a comfort for the officers themselves.
"We have a very stressful job," Crabill said "They are nice to have through our job through the stressors we have. They're nice to talk to, to bounce things off of, to help us through our tough times."
Hansel said chaplains aren't interested in converting residents or officers to one religion or another, and they do not lead prayers unless asked. Rather, he said they are there to assist when a delicate touch is needed.
"We find the most tender way we know how to present that difficult news," Hansel said.
