Dr. Waddell Barnes Receives National Garden Clubs Award

MACON, Ga., Feb. 14 -- Middle Georgia State College issued the following news release:

The National Garden Clubs is giving an Award of Excellence to Dr. Waddell Barnes, founder and namesake of the Botanical Gardens on the Macon Campus of Middle Georgia State College, at its annual convention in May. The award is the highest honor presented to a non-member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., for efforts showing significant contribution toward the advancement of the goals and purposes of the organization.

The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., nominated Barnes for the honor, describing his dedication to horticultural research, garden education, environmental stewardship and community beautification.

Barnes, a retired physician who practiced internal medicine and oncology, spent many years as chairman of the former Macon State College Foundation and has devoted considerable time and resources to the development of the extensive botanical gardens on the Macon Campus.

In 2013, Barnes was one of 14 individuals, organizations or companies recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation during the annual Arbor Day Awards. Barnes was the recipient of the Lawrence Enersen Award.

Middle Georgia State will host the 10th annual Waddell Barnes Botanical Gardens Spring Symposium on Saturday, Feb. 22. This event takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Professional Sciences and Conference Center on the Macon Campus.

This year's conference features presentations on hydrangeas, tea farms, native azalea and orchids. Breakout sessions will provide information from notable experts about pruning and propagation. Vendors will have plants and art for sale. The $40 registration fee includes a continental breakfast and lunch.
