A.M. BestTV: Reports & Research; Insurers Harness Gameplay Tools

February 12, 2014

OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- This episode of A.M. BestTV looks at how insurers are using gaming mechanics to boost branding, foster education and influence policyholder behavior. This technique, known as gamification, is being used by insurance companies in a variety of ways, said Karlyn Carnahan, a principal at Novarica. She said educating consumers about safe driving is one of the main ways it's being used to manipulate behavior: “(Playing a game) impacts the creative side, as well as the analytical, which means that the information lasts a little longer.” Kari Mather, APR, corporate relations at Allstate, said the company uses virtual reality video games so drivers can experience what it's like to text and drive in a safe environment. Gamification is also being employed by health insurers as well. Eric Herbek, vice president, product solutions, consumer health engagement at Cigna, said the technology is being utilized to get customers to engage in managing their health and learning about the costs of the decisions that they make in their everyday lives.
