Feb. 11--Tropicana Evansville outperformed its major competitors -- and Indiana casinos overall -- during January, a state gaming report shows.
Tropicana earned $9.5 million in gaming revenue last month, up 5 percent from the same period a year earlier. The casino also saw 86,961 visitors, a drop of 3 percent from the previous year.
The numbers come from the Indiana Gaming Commission'sJanuary 2014 revenue report, released Monday. Each month the gaming commission releases a report detailing how much each Indiana casino earned from gaming, how many people visited each facility, how much those visitors spent on gaming and how much each facility paid in taxes.
Tropicana's performance in January was significantly better than either of its two main competitors, the French Lick (Ind.) casino and the Harrah's casino in Metropolis, Ill.
Last month French Lick saw 51,668 visitors, down 21 percent from a year earlier. Its gaming revenue dropped 22 percent, to $5.1 million.
According to the Illinois Gaming Board's monthly report, Harrah's Metropolis saw its visitor count drop 17 percent last month, to 42,410. The casino's gaming revenue dropped 15 percent, to $5.7 million.
Tropicana also outperformed Indiana casinos as a whole last month.
As a group, Indiana's casinos saw 1.3 million visitors, down 24 percent from January 2013. The casinos earned $155.3 million in gaming revenue, down 22 percent.
