TORONTO - The Canadian dollar closed at 89.78 cents U-S, up 0.22 of a cent from Thursday's close. The S-and-P/T-S-X composite index was down 40.34 points to 13,694.94. Volume at 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time was 330.85 (m) million shares. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 149.76 points to 15,698.85. The Standard-and-Poor's 500 index slipped 11.60 points to 1,782.59. In the New York Mercantile Exchange , the gold futures for April closed at 1,239 dollars , 80 cents U-S per ounce, down two dollars , 70 cents .
