KUWAIT: Dar Al-Shifa Hospital continues to lead the way in Kuwait and in the Middle East with its medical imaging technology. One of the latest achievements to share is the ongoing installation of a new Ultra High Filed 3T MRI scanner at the Diagnostic Imaging Center (DIC). Weighing 7 tones, the magnet was lifted by cranes and moved into the Basement on 26/12/20013 at 5:30 pm. The Delicate installation proceeded without a hitch, as the whole team specially flown to Kuwait was very well prepared for the task. Commissioning work is now proceeding ahead of the new MRI unit planned opening in end of January 2014. The New MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scanner is the first Ultra high Field Machine in the Private Sector and the First 64 channels system in the Middle East. Its major use will be for stroke, heart disease, Epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Functional Neuroimaging , preoperative mapping and is expected to provide clinicians with the most advanced imaging of Neurological, Cardiac, Musculoskeletal and other conditions. Manager of Clinical Ancillary services at Dar Al Shifa Hospital, Alexandra Ouzounova said the acquisition of the equipment will stimulate a number of ground-breaking projects. "We are proud to take possession of this exciting new technology, the first of its kind across the Middle East, Ultra high Field Image Quality, Innovative applications, Functional MRI, Organ specific Spectroscopy studies, along with maximum patient comfort. Our 3T MRI Skyra has the shorter and wider bore in the marketSajeev Krishnan , accommodating up to 225 kg Patient weight, shorter exam times and utilizing the latest noise reduction technology .The establishment of the second MRI Unit is indicative of the strength of the Diagnostic Imaging Center at Dar Al-Shifa Hospital and our commitment to making cutting-edge research technology available to our patients", said Ouzounova. Head of Diagnostic Imaging Center and Consultant Neuroradiologist at Dar Al-Shifa Hospital, Dr Mohammed Ismail, said: "The 3T Skyra MRI scanner positioned Dar Al-Shifa Hospital's Imaging Center at the top echelon of leading global MRI centers. The skills needed to use this technology are quite rare, but we have some of the world's best MRI experts here with us. Their expertise has largely outstripped the technology available locally, which is why we needed this machine. We already have priorities and projects lined upSajeev Krishnan , such as early detection, accurate Epilepsy diagnosis and follow up in pediatrics and adults, Neurodegenerative, Musculoskeletal, Functional MRI, food addiction, stroke, cancer, preoperative mapping, Cardiac Imaging and more. The installation of this machine will build the capacity to start conducting pioneering research across a wide range of different medical fields."
