Status Solutions and ArmorActive Bring CATIE Touchscreen Technology to Seniors

January 31, 2014

ENP Newswire - 31 January 2014

Release date- 30012014 - Situational awareness technology company Status Solutions and custom tablet kiosk solution provider ArmorActive today announced their partnership in using tablet technology to change the world for seniors by ending digital isolation.

Status Solutions' Apple iPad-based CATIE (Communication and Access to Information Everywhere) solution is housed in ArmorActive's tamper-resistant kiosk hardware for deployment in senior living communities across the United States and Canada.

CATIE is a multimedia application for communication and self-service that provides intercom, electronic bulletin board/digital signage, message center and concierge capabilities. The desired business logic is programmed under an endless supply of call-to-action buttons on the user interface, customized so each community can deliver its own content and amenities. Residents then have what they want at their fingertips - no keyboards or training required - from receiving emails and photos from their grandchildren to finding out what's being served for dinner or making reservations for upcoming activities.

Oxford Grand in Wichita, Kan., is one of the latest senior living communities to implement CATIE in ArmorActive kiosks as in-room communication and self-service portals for its residents. 'Through CATIE, we're helping our residents connect both with their families and the internal community here at The Oxford Grand,' says Jason Wiley, Oxford Senior Living co-founder and executive vice president for operations. 'CATIE creates a synergy within the community as a means for residents to communicate among themselves, sharing pictures and news about community activities, menus and more. Meanwhile, the iPad platform helps bridge a generation gap between our residents and their grandchildren, allowing them access to a world where pictures and videos can be shared in an instant.'

'We're really touched by the goal behind CATIE to make sure this generation [of seniors] doesn't get skipped,' explains Scott Paul, ArmorActive's founder and CEO. 'Status Solutions is at the forefront, taking a beautiful consumer device in the iPad and making it valuable to an industry and a demographic that really needs it. We want to see CATIE take hold because society needs this sort of technology, plus the multitude of efficiencies the solution creates for individual users and the communities themselves are just incredible. Our missions really meld when it comes to making touch technology more pronounced within the enterprise.'

'The average age of CCRC [continuing care retirement community] residents may be in the early 80s, but they are feisty and hungry for knowledge and interaction - and they need it to prevent depression, functional decline and even premature death,' says Mike MacLeod, Status Solutions' president and CATIE's inventor. 'It's called senior living, not dying, so it's time for the industry to realize the potential of technology not just for life safety and security but also for life quality. Seniors in long-term care settings need meaningful connections and experiences plus access to all of the valuable information that's available from the outside world. These are key amenities and transformative elements for the residents and their communities.'

Senior living providers are starting to realize the need for technology to improve residents' lives and their own business operations - it's actually crucial for their survival within the industry, according to Derek Dunham, vice president of Varsity, a mature market strategic marketing communications agency. 'Innovation is crucial if providers want to keep up with the growing number of aging consumers and be able to meet Boomers' high expectations.'

In fact, the 65+ demographic is expected to reach 55 million in 2020 and control nearly 70 percent of disposable income, just in the United States.
