Orange County Seeking at-Risk Youth for 'Building Futures'

ORANGE COUNTY, N.C. , Jan. 28 -- Orange County issued the following news release: The Orange County Department of Social Services (DSS) is recruiting young people who are seeking assistance with school, employment and training services. An informational session will be hosted at the Southern Human Services Center to introduce interested individuals to the program. The meeting will be on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 , from 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. An RSVP is due by Thursday, January 30 . DSS is using grant money to assist at-risk youth ages 16-21 to become successful in school and find employment. Orange County Building Futures is a youth development program offering comprehensive year-round services to Orange County youth. The program consists of the following aspects: 1 Tutoring, study skills, training, and instruction leading to the completion of secondary schooling, including dropout prevention strategies. 2 Alternative secondary school services. 3 Summer employment opportunities directly linked to academic and occupational learning. 4 Paid and unpaid work experiences, including internships and job shadowing. 5 Occupational skills training. 6 Leadership development opportunities. 7 Supportive services. 8 Adult mentoring. 9 Follow up services for not less than 12 months after the participant completes the program. 10 Comprehensive guidance and counseling, including drug and alcohol counseling and referral to counseling as appropriate to meet the needs of the participant. In order to be eligible for Orange County Building Futures, applicants must be low income and meet at least one of the following barriers to employment: 1 School dropout (individual is no longer attending any school and has not received a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent). 2 Basic skills deficient. 3 Pregnant or parenting. 4 Homeless, runaway or foster child. 5 Offender.
