OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Jan. 29 -- The International Association of Plastics Distribution issued the following news release:
The International Association of Plastics Distribution (IAPD) congratulates Jonathan Perez de Alderete, president and founder of Nonspec, on being recognized as a 2014 Rising Engineering Star by Design News. Nonspec from the University of Massachusetts Lowell received the grand prize at the inaugural IAPD Plastics Application Design Competition in 2013 for their telescoping prosthetic limb designed to grow with children and priced low enough to be a viable option for use in developing nations.
According to Design News, "Jonathan has been the main innovator and driving force behind starting a company to provide pediatric amputees in developing nations with durable and inexpensive prosthetic limbs that 'grow' with the child. His 'bite-off-more-than-you-can-chew' approach has allowed him to accelerate the product's life cycle, and his leadership skills have driven the team to keep up with him. His innovation and determination to solve problems is contagious, and encourages extensively thought out solutions that have the potential to change lives."
"I'm pleased to see Jonathan and the Nonspec team get this recognition from Design News, the media sponsor of the first ever IAPD Plastics Application Design Competition," said IAPD CEO Susan Avery, CAE. "The team gave a powerful presentation at the 2013 IAPD Annual Convention, where they demonstrated the contribution of plastics to their prosthetic limbs. Thanks to plastics sourced from IAPD distributor Total Plastics, Inc., their limbs are impact-resistant, can handle more weight than the metal materials they tested and, most important, can keep the price point low enough to benefit those who need these devices the most: children in third-world countries. I am thrilled to see the Nonspec team continue to get media attention for the work they are doing, thanks in part to the connections they made at the 2013 IAPD Annual Convention and Plastics Showcase."
