Working with Savant, Tex R Us developed an integrated, web-based system for tracking information on a wide range of field operations at Badami. It took Tex R Us and Savant about three years, working together, and about a
The application covers regulatory compliance, field maintenance scheduling, personnel training, work rotation schedules, safety reporting, hazard warnings and human resources reporting, Zhelayev said. The system also tracks purchasing including who is available to approve expenditures when they are needed.
Each module of the system interfaces with another, so that a work order triggers a material order and then tracks the materials until they arrive at Badami, Zhelayev said.
Those operations are vital to keeping the supply chain for parts and supplies moving efficiently. It also tracks documents and permits to ensure regulatory compliance.
Savant and its partner,
Savant's strategy was to develop Badami using smart technologies, like the Tex R Us software, so that it could lower operating costs. The efficiencies gained by using new information tools were an important part of that, according to
Information technology is not the only innovation Savant is using at Badami. The company's employees are cross-trained and have multi-task skills, so they can work on different types of equipment. Innovations in maintenance are also a factor.
"We have a heavy focus on preventative maintenance on our plant rotating equipment," which helps control costs, Henning said. "Also, our strategy with an aggressive paraffin clean-out program on our producing wells has helped stabilize production."
Badami now has eight producing wells in operation, producing about 1,200 barrels per day. Badami's oil tends to be on the heavy side, Henning said, typically about 22 or 23 degrees on the API gravity scale. (Other North Slope fields have higher gravity oils, which are considered "lighter.")
Because of the nature of its oil, Badami experiences a problem with a "drop-out" of paraffin from the oil at certain temperatures. The paraffin accumulates on the inside of the steel tubing in the wells and can impede production unless it is cleaned regularly.
A critical part of the Badami maintenance strategy is using the new information system because it gives the field operators not only advance notice of maintenance schedules on the well clean-outs, and other maintenance, but also the parts and equipment and any specialized skills that are needed.
"We do all of this with one program."
Getting everyone linked into the same system was important, too.
"I wanted a system that could talk to people (give access) throughout the organization, Henning said.
The biggest problem on the Slope are the shift changes, which can be on two week-on, two-week off or even three on and off, Henning said. For most companies and contractors on the Slope, communication between the incoming and outgoing shifts depend on people writing "change-out" notes, Henning said.
"Now we have people post notes on a dashboard with all of the information. We became a lot more efficient," he said.
Zhelayev believes the system is the first of its kind used in the oil and gas industry. Henning agrees with that.
"I don't know of another system like this anywhere, and I've looked all over," Henning said.
Now that the application is being demonstrated at Badami, other independent companies looking to develop small fields are interested in it, such as Brooks Range Petroleum for its planned Mustang field, as well as major contractors, said
Henning said, "I'm really happy the way it has developed, and we'd be happy to see others use it. This has been a value-added system for Savant Alaska. Any small industrial or business organization can use this."
Zhelayev said, "It's great to see state-of-the-art information technology solutions being developed right here in
