Visionary talks on the future of imaging in applications from healthcare to jet engine design and an approach to reverse-engineering how the brain manages human vision are highlights of IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging Science and Technology next month in San Francisco, California. The event includes 650 technical talks, a popular 3D Theatre, a hands-on demonstration of new imaging and display products, and an extensive short course program.
Sponsored by the Society for Imaging Science and Technology (IS&T) and SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, the event will run 2-6 February at the Hilton San Francisco, Union Square.
In the event’s two plenary talks:
• Jack Gallant, University of California, Berkeley, will discuss his lab’s data-driven system identification approach toward reverse-engineering the brain’s visual imaging system, with the goal of designing artificial systems with the same capabilities. Their approach could form the basis of practical new brain reading technologies, and can inform development of biologically-inspired computer vision systems.
• Charles Bouman, Purdue University, will offer a look into the new field of integrated imaging, a convergence of technologies enabling the creation of a variety of imaging systems based on the integration of algorithms, computation, and sensor design. He will include examples of state-of-the-art integrated imaging systems based on computed tomography, transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron beam imaging, optical sensing, and scanning electron microscopy, and explore their use and potential impact in applications ranging from healthcare to jet engine design.
The perennially popular 3D Theatre featuring new, original, large-screen 3D footage from around the world will again be presented as part of the Stereoscopic Displays and Applications conference. Single-entry passes ? including 3D glasses ? are available for the 3D Theatre on Monday evening and demonstration session on Tuesday evening.
The interactive, hands-on demonstration session will showcase new hardware, software, imaging, and display products such as the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, TriDef 3D converter technology, and Voxiebox holographic gaming system.
Electronic Imaging will also feature a focused exhibition on mobile and electronic imaging technology companies, including Qualcomm, Pixelteq, Fairchild Imaging, Image Engineering, Imatest, Labsphere, Image Science Associates, and VPixx Technologies. The free exhibition is open Tuesday and Wednesday.
