Tokyo shares drop, giving up early gains on weak China data

TOKYO , Jan. 23 -- ( Kyodo ) _ Tokyo shares gave up early gains to finish Thursday lower as weaker-than-expected Chinese factory activity data prompted investors to lock in recent gains. The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 125.07 points, or 0.79 percent, from Wednesday at 15,695.89. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 12.11 points, or 0.93 percent, lower at 1,287.52. A broad range of shares drew selling, with metal, utility and land transport issues drawing selling in particular.
