Jan. 21 --One of the North State's most spectacular events begins Tuesday as people in the cattle, horse and working cowdog business from all across the U.S. and Canada converge on Red Bluff for the 73rd Annual Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale, and the 36th Annual Livestock Dog Sale, Jan. 28-31 and Feb. 1 , at the Tehama District Fairgrounds on Antelope Boulevard . It is the longest-running livestock event west of the Rocky Mountains . Adam Owens , Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale manager, said, "In the cattle business, when you say you are going to ' Red Bluff ,' everybody knows that you mean the Red Bluff Bull Sale. For 73 years, through changing times and uncertainties, one thing stays the same -- the high quality and consistency of the livestock brought to you by the consignors at this sale." For consignors and buyers, the Red Bluff Bull and Gelding Sale is a unique chance to find and sale the best quality animals in one place at one time on the West Coast . "The sale is designed to be the best opportunity for commercial cattlemen to select carefully inspected, breeding age and outstanding herd improving bulls. Bulls that come to this sale are from the leading breeders in the West," Owens said. "The same can be said for the geldings and dogs that are consigned and bought at this sale. These animals are from the leading breeders in the West, and we have the highest expectations of the animals that come to this event." He said while the number of animals coming to the sale this year aren't what they were last year, the total is still very good with 431 bulls, 99 geldings, five mules and 20 dogs. He notes that all of the animals sold at this "gold standard" event have passed through a strict sift for soundness and structure. Horses and bulls are graded and those not making the grade are disqualified from the sale. Corning Union High School District Rodgers Ranch is bringing and selling a Black Angus bull at the sale. The animal has been raised by the school's agriculture department students and will be prepped and handled at the sale by those same students. In years past the school has done very well selling bulls born and raised at the ranch and expects to do so once again. Along with the animals, the sale features a Western art show and trade show, horse and dog clinics, food, horse and dog competitions, and awarding of the finest bulls and geldings at the event. (see schedule for all events) "We have a few new things this year, including two working cowdog clinics by Roy Cox ," Owens said. "We have more vendors this year than last, and our fourth annual Western Art Show is getting bigger and better than ever before. Last year's event brought in more than $1.8 million just in the sales of bulls, geldings and working livestock dogs. The top bull sold for $13,750 , with the top horse auctioned for $17,500 and the high price cowdog went for $8,700 . However, those dollars do not bring into account the bucks spent at the event's trade show, dinners and art show, or the dough dished out for meals and accommodations related to the sale. All of the Red bluff Bull Sale's profits are used to support the cattle and horse industry-related causes and agriculture-related youth events. The volunteer committee for this years sale is comprised of: President John Owens ; Vice President Ron Anderson ; Sale Manager Adam Owens ; Director Ken Hufford ; Secretary Matt Owens ; Director Matt Owens ; Treasurer Dusty deBraga; Director Button Daugherty; Director Brett "Mac" McGriffin ; Honorary Director Bob deBraga; and Honorary Director Gordon Bruce ; advisory committee members Kenneth Owens , Nathan Owens , Bub Ragan, Walt Stein , Ben Sale , Brian Birt , Robert Staley , John Venable , Bryan Owens and Roy Owens . ___ (c)2014 the Corning Observer (Corning, Calif.)
