The street photography works of Pierrick Blons ( ) have been wowing visitors to the Stephen Bartels Gallery ( -photography.html) ( 30 Churton Street , London , SW1V2LP) since November. Following the huge success of the London installation, Blons’ latest project Rouennais will be exhibited at the Rouen Gallery MJC Rive Gauche in Normandy, France until the 25 January 2014 . Much like the pieces on show in London , Rouennais comprises a series of strongly emotive portraits which depict multi-cultural Normandy. Shot entirely in the French city of Rouen, the exhibition opens a window to the life of a city through its inhabitants. Bons trained his lens on the people of the city, capturing them in black and white, in a studio he moved to different locations directly where people live, to discover the real face of the city. He said, “This project started from a simple question. Who is an inhabitant of Rouen in 2013? Where are they from? Who are they? Are there some stereotypes? We wanted to depict the multicultural aspect of the city. The only way to answer this was to get portraits of people living around us.” Blons developed a passion for photography while travelling through Europe and Asia in 2007. He perfected his technique via the medium of street photography which he shoots almost exclusively on film in black and white. On returning to his native France at the end of his travels, Blons mastered traditional film processing. He has studied with renowned practitioners including Gildas Lepetit-Castel , Justin Sainsbury , Guillaume Kayacan , and Charles FrÉger. For those unable to visit Rouen, Blons’ London exhibition is a permanent installation at the Stephen Bartels Gallery . Works include iconic, intimate portraits of cities such as Lisbon , Berlin , Amsterdam and Paris , all told through its inhabitants. Images such as Escaping the Darkness, which shows a Parisian businessman leaving the office after dark and walking from the shadowy La DÉfense district towards a brighter city street, capture a fleeting moment of interaction between a city and its people. The photographs shown at the Stephen Bartels Gallery are rotated with new images exhibited frequently. The Stephen Bartels Gallery is one of a new breed of London galleries turning the traditional gallery model on its head. It uses high definition screens digital technology to turn its space into any represented photographer’s private gallery at a moment’s notice.
