It’s tough being Nintendo these days. The reknowned video game publisher is battling an upheaval task courting its WiiU home console to gamers as it competes against next-gen offerings from Microsoft and Sony. And despite offering hardware bundles and price cuts in western markets, and releasing a widely acclaimed Mario game, things are just not looking up for the Japanese giant.
In a recent financial call, Nintendo reported its third consecutive annual loss of 25 billion yen. As a result, the company has slashed its global sales forecast for WiiU from 9 million units to 2.8 million units. It’s handheld system, the 3DS, also received similar scaling down, from an expected 18 million units sales to 13.5 million units.
This has led the company to think of new business ventures, according to company president Satoru Iwata, who said they are now considering moving into the smartphone market.
“We are thinking about a new business structure,” Iwata said at a press conference yesterday in Osaka, Japan. “Given the expansion of smart devices, we are naturally studying how smart devices can be used to grow the game-player business. It's not as simple as enabling Mario to move on a smartphone.”
Nintendo has always been pretty defiant of industry trends and have always sought to do their own thing, be it introducing motion controls with the Wii or second-screen experiences with the WiiU. And while Nintendo has had success in carving their own market and setting trends, it seems they are far lagging behind this time around with their vision. Moving into the smartphone market seems like a wise choice considering their success with handheld devices, although if they will simply push games for existing hardware or create their own will remain to be seen.
