International syndicate targets wealthy South Africans

January 17, 2014

A MAN who claimed he had been hired to kill former national police commissioner Bheki Cele and allegedly extorted money from him in exchange not to carry out the "hit", could be behind an international syndicate targeting wealthy South Africans. But Cele said until police finalised their investigation he was not taking any chances - he has stepped up security around himself, his home and family. The Nigerian man, who allegedly threatened and verbally abused Cele for almost month, was arrested in Cape Town this week by the KZN Specific Crimes Task Team. He had allegedly also sent Cele a string of abusive text messages demanding money. He was tracked to an upmarket complex in Table View, using cellphone technology. The banking details the 24-year-old man gave Cele to deposit the money belongs to a woman from Cape Town . Police could not locate her at the informal settlement the bank has as her home address. The suspect has appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on charges of intimidation and extortion. The Star
