SCRANTON, Pa. , Jan. 14 -- The National Park Service's Steamtown National Historic Site issued the following news release: America's Best Idea - the national parks - gets even better with several entrance fee-free days at Steamtown National Historic Site, downtown Scranton, Pa. The historic railroad museum will waive its daily Entrance Fees on the following nine days in 2014: * January 20 ( Martin Luther King , Jr. Day) * January 20 ( Martin Luther King , Jr. Day) February 15-17 ( Presidents' Day weekend) * January 20 ( Martin Luther King , Jr. Day) April 19-20 (opening weekend of National Park Week) * January 20 ( Martin Luther King , Jr. Day) August 25 ( National Park Service's 98th Birthday) * January 20 ( Martin Luther King , Jr. Day) September 27 (National Public Lands Day) * January 20 ( Martin Luther King , Jr. Day) November 11 ( Veterans Day ) The National Park Service wants to reinforce that our national parks are places for everyone to have fun, reconnect with nature and history, and build a sense of ownership and stewardship toward parks and the environment. The entrance fee-free days at Steamtown will provide complimentary admission to the Park grounds, museum complex and scheduled walking tours, but will not include train rides and/or other amenity fees charged by the Park. Steamtown National Historic Site is the only place in the National Park System where the story of steam railroading and the people who made it possible is told. The historic, industrial railroad yard site features a visitor orientation center with exhibits showing how the former Delaware , Lackawanna & Western Railroad's Scranton Yards evolved from 1850 to present, a 250-seat digital surround-sound theater showing the park movie, "Steel and Steam," throughout the day, and steam-era railroading history, roundhouse and technology museums that tell a multimedia-rich story of the significance of railroad transportation to the U.S. Industrial Revolution.Visitors may also join a scheduled Locomotive Shop tour. For a small charge - $5 for all ages 6 and older - visitors may also enjoy the " Scranton Limited " short train ride inside the railroad yards on entrance fee-free days that the train operates. Note that the train operates only during the summer season. Located in downtown Scranton, Pa. , Steamtown NHS is open daily from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. through March 28 ; regular hours, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. , resume for the summer season on Saturday, March 29 . From I-81 follow exit 185 ( Central Scranton Expressway ); then, follow the brown and white signs to the main entrance at Lackawanna and Cliff Avenues ( GPS: N 41.41, W 75.67).
