1st LD Writethru: Italian film "Sacro GRA" wins Golden Lion at Venice Film Festival

VENICE, Italy, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Documentary "Sacro GRA" by Italian director Gianfranco Rosi won the top Golden Lion award for Best Film at the 70th Venice International Film Festival on Saturday.

"Sacro GRA", which is about lives around the ring road in the periphery of Rome, is one of the two documentaries that run for competition this year for the first time in the festival's history.

Greek director Alexandros Avranas won the Silver Lion for Best Director for his "Miss Violence," the story of the terrible manipulation carried out in a family twisted beyond repair by poverty and despair.

The film's protagonist Themis Panou won the Coppa Volpi award for Best Actor.

The Coppa Volpi award for Best Actress was given to 82-year-old Elena Cotta for her role in "Via Castellana Bandiera" by Italian director Emma Dante.

A total of 20 titles disputed for the Golden Lion at the world's oldest film festival, which ran from Aug. 28 to Sept. 7 on the Lido seafront in the Italian water city.

The competition section had a jury of nine key film figures of various countries, including Chinese actor and director Jiang Wen, and was chaired by Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, one of the most respected directors in the history of cinema.
