Sept. 07--The Mitchell Area Concert Series for 2013-14 promises everything from classic cowboy crooning to furious fiddling -- and that's just two of the shows.

MACA recently announced its concert series lineup for this season, which will include The Unexpected Surfer Boys, Sons of the Pioneers, Everything Fitz and the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass.

Jim Blades, executive director for MACA, said the the association's membership drive started Aug. 29 and will continue through Sept. 16. He said he hopes to have most memberships finalized by then, but people can continue to purchase memberships throughout the year. They will also be available at each concert. Memberships grant access to all of the MACA concerts, as well as the concert series offered in Pierre, Huron and Yankton.

A 2013-14 season membership is $50 for adults or $20 for students high-school aged or younger, Blades said. Family memberships are $100. There are also contributing memberships, which range from $125 to $1,000.

Each of the shows is family friendly, Blades said, and MACA strives to bring in a variety of entertainers to reach broad audiences.

"The whole business is to have something for anybody," he said.

Unexpected Surfer Boys

The Unexpected Surfer Boys will kick off this year's concert series at 2 p.m. on Oct. 13. All shows are at the Corn Palace.

According to Blades and the band's website, The Unexpected Surfer Boys are a "rollicking tribute" to 1960s pop sensations the Beach Boys. The group also performs well-known Broadway numbers.

"They'll have a cross-section of a lot of different kinds of music," Blades said. "They are very familiar on stage."

Sons of the Pioneers

Blades said he expects the long-standing country western group Sons of the Pioneers to be the biggest hit in this year's lineup. The group will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 7.

Sons of the Pioneers are known for helping to launch the career of one of the original singing cowboys, Roy Rogers, and for recording classic cowboy western tunes like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "Cool Water" and "Ghost Riders in the Sky."

"We had them a couple years ago, and we had a lot of people from out of state that came and wanted to see the show," Blades said. "It is definitely the old-time cowboy, western songs."

Everything Fitz

The combination act of Everything Fitz will step its way into Mitchell at 7:30 p.m. on March 17. Blades said the members of the Fitz family play the fiddles and do step dancing.

"It's kind of a play on words, because it's the Fitz family," he said. "It's a combination act on stage, and very active."

According to its website, the Canadian group combines an eclectic range of music styles, from bluegrass to jazz to Celtic.

Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass

For the final act in this season's series, Blades said the Rodney Mack Philadelphia Big Brass will perform at 7:30 p.m. on May 12.

Its website describes the group as being composed of "some of America's top brass musicians," with performances ranging from solo trumpet to brass quintet to the full ensemble with percussion.
