'Epic' wins DVD sales crown; 'Olympus Has Fallen' still top rental

September 3, 2013

Sept. 03--The computer-animated fantasy film "Epic" was the best-selling DVD and Blu-ray title in its first week in release, passing the action movies that dominated the previous week's rankings.

"Olympus Has Fallen," a White House-set action movie starring Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart, fell to No. 2 in its second week.

"Epic," featuring the voices of Amanda Seyfried, Jason Sudeikis and Beyonce, tells the story of a teenage girl magically sent to a secret forest in the midst of an intense struggle between good and evil.

The eco-friendly tale received mixed reviews from critics, generating a 64% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Los Angeles Times film critic Betsy Sharkey said the animation and effects were stunning, but that the storytelling was less so.

"When the movie should touch the heart, it just misses," Sharkey wrote. "When moments should produce gales of laughter, it struggles for a smile. When panic and fear should set the heart racing, it doesn't."

"Olympus Has Fallen" held the top spot in rentals.
