Accordion Fest moving to Medina Railroad Museum

September 2, 2013

Sept. 02--The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council (GO ART!) will hold its 5th annual Accordion Fest on Sept. 28, moving this year to the Medina Railroad Museum in Medina. The program runs from 4 to 7 p.m., featuring the melodious sounds of accordions and concertinas from diverse musical traditions.

A donation of $5 is requested, with guests 18 and under admitted free, plus the opportunity to win prizes from Roxy's Music, The Shirt Factory Cafe, and more. Visit for more information.

The Fest also lines up with the "Ale in Autumn" beer tasting extravaganza in downtown Medina from 3 to 7 p.m. Find out more and purchase tickets at

The Fest is presented by GO ART! with support from Roxy's Music, the Medina Railroad Museum, Medina Sandstone Trust, Medina Business Association, the Orleans County Legislature, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the NYS Legislature.

The Accordion Fest starts with a mini-concert by C'est Bon Cajun Dance Band. The members of this all-women group have been singing and playing Cajun music for two decades around New York and in the Northeast with a variety of performers at festivals, clubs and dancehalls. They came together in 2010 to form their own band to play "hard-rockin, foot-stompin, girl-powered Cajun dancehall music."

Next up at 5 p.m. is "Accordions 'Round The World," a presentation of diverse music from Irish, Eastern European, Polish, and Italian traditions. SUNY Geneseo Professor of Music Jim Kimball will lead this session, which features musicians Ted McGraw, Alex Alexandrov, Ken Machelski, and Pat Gambacurta, each performing on their own finely crafted and sometimes unique instruments. The performers collectively illustrate the extensive travels of the accordion through many cultures of our world. They will be followed by a Roland digital accordion demo and short open mike slot.

The Fest will conclude with a mini concert at 6 p.m. by The Buffalo Touch, one of the region's premier Polka bands. Formed in October of 1995 under the leadership of Jerry Darlak, the Touch has gained many acclaims over the years including numerous albums, three Grammy nominations and membership in the International Polka Association Hall of Fame. The band continues to record and will be performing throughout the year at festivals and clubs coast to coast. Their high-energy, dance-friendly music appeals to all ages.

In addition to the concerts several regional businesses will offer prizes for a drawing, including a Yamaha guitar package from Roxy's Music of Batavia, $25 gift certificate from Medina's Shirt Factory Cafe, and more. Raffle tickets are on sale now at GO ART! (343-9313) and at the event; winners will be drawn at the end of the fest; need not be present to win. Performers will also provide a display table of different kinds of accordions, notably Irish concertinas and button boxes and Polish concertinas.
