Sept. 26--Their 'Heart' will go on

Director Ron Howard and his "Rush" star Chris Hemsworth are diving right in to another movie together. Production is underway on "Heart of the Sea," based on Nathaniel Philbrick's novel about the real-life New England whaling ship Essex and its encounter with a mammoth whale. The disaster inspired Herman Melville to write "Moby-Dick." Hemsworth plays the first mate out for justice, and Benjamin Walker is his inexperienced captain.

The art of 'Robocop'

England has its Mr. Darcy statue, and Philadelphia has its Rocky. And soon, Detroit will have its Robocop. Artists this week unveiled a 10-foot model of the sci-fi icon, the policeman in a ravaged Detroit who was turned into a hybrid human-robot. MGM is pleased; the studio is busy rebooting the 1987 movie into a newer model, due to arrive in theaters Feb. 7. The finished bronze statue should be ready next summer.

Receiving 'The Giver'

The parade of movies based on kids' dystopian novels marches on. Now Lois Lowry's award-winning "The Giver" has a release date, Aug. 15, 2014, and a cast. Jeff Bridges is the title character, the one person who remembers human emotion and his society's horrible past, who must now pass his secret knowledge down to young Jonas ( Brenton Thwaites). But first, you can catch Thwaites playing the prince in Disney's "Maleficent," the live-action retelling of "Sleeping Beauty" starring Angelina Jolie. It's due May 30.

If the shoe fits ...

Speaking of live-action fairy tales, Disney released its first photo from the set of "Cinderella," starring Lily James (she played that strumpet Lady Rose on "Downton Abbey"). For once, Helena Bonham Carter is not the villain -- she's the Fairy Godmother. The role of the evil stepmother went to Cate Blanchett. The film, directed by Kenneth Branagh, is set to open in March 2015.

A sticky situation

Remember that big scandal up in Quebec last year when $20 million worth of maple syrup was stolen from a warehouse? Canadian police are still arresting people involved. And now Jason Segel is set to star in a movie based on the heist, with Seth Gordon ("Horrible Bosses") directing. Sweet!
