Sept. 26--TUPELO -- The world gets a little smaller next week as the Manhattan Short Film Festival graces movie screens all over the world.

The 16th annual world-wide short film festival picks the best shorts, screens them in theaters around the world and audiences vote on their favorite. The winner is announced Oct. 6 at 9 p.m. at manhattanshort.com.

"Tupelo is the only city in the state participating in the Manhattan," said Pat Rasberry, Tupelo Film Commissioner.

The Manhattan's organizers received a record-breaking 628 short entries from 48 countries, including Finland, France, Ireland, Australia and America, and then 10 best shorts were chosen to be screened across the world.

Tupelo's screenings will be Oct. 3 at the Malco in Tupelo. Tupelo's audience will be a part of the more than 100,000 film fans who'll participate in the Manhattan.

Selections include the comedy "Do I Have to Take Care of Everything," from Findland, about a family's chaotic morning; "Irish Folk Furniture," an animated documentary about repair and recycling in rural Ireland; the American film "Black Metal," about a rock singer who realizes his violent lyrics have an effect on others; the French film "Faces from Places" about a traveling illustrator; and the British movie "Kizmet Diner," about a singing waitress.

"These films are incredible," Rasberry said. "These have top-notch quality and stories."

Because the films are short, the event lasts about two hours. There's an intermission.

Some movies may be for adult audiences, Rasberry said.
