Please let me correct an impression here concerning internet. Internet is always a good place for anyone seeking innovative and productive ways of engagement. It has a rich, rewarding experience which most unfortunately in spite of all these wonderful impacts, some people capitalize on the weaknesses of internet and users are exploited for fraudulent activities. Sometimes, these people can be individuals or members of organized an crime network that goes beyond the boundary of our internet community with substantial investment capacity in time and money. Some of the common dangers of their exploits include spamming, credit card fraud, software piracy, denial of service attacks, and distribution of child pornography materials, computer viruses, phishing, and cracking. The extent of harm they can inflict is severe for not only business, but for individual users as well. Even with social media, a good local example is the recent gruesome murder of Cynthia through social media deception. Those boys behind are well coordinated in their mission. And they got the unfortunate prey they are looking for.
However, if we are to go by the current nature of internet fraud peculiar to our internet community, I would say that the most common is scams. This is a fraudulent scheme or networks orchestrated to a trick you with the ultimate goal of swindle or defraud you of your money, or any other valuables such as trade secret, intellectual property and so on. Anybody can be scammed. Scammer does not only exploit your greedy nature, even non greedy sincere person can be scammed. For instance, With smart phones topping most shopping lists these days, scammers are offering bogus offers for free iPads. Most often people are asked to purchase other products and provide their credit card number to get the free smart phone. Of course, victims never receive any smart phone but your credit card may have been stolen and instantly used before you even reported the case to your bank. In another instance, users take a quiz on smart phone to win a free gift and must supply their cell phone number to receive the results. In the real sense of it, they are signed up for a cell phone scam unknowingly.
Spam is most often considered to be junk mail or junk newsgroup or newsletter postings. Spam is any unsolicited email directed to you with goal of securing your attention and influence you to take action. Please note not all unsolicited mails are spam. Real spam is unsolicited email advertising for some product sent to your email. The danger of Spam is that it wastes your valued time with unwanted e-mails, eats up a lot of your internet resources such as your network bandwidth, your memory, and it can even divert your attention and sometimes capture your emotion which can prompt you to act wrongly, for example porn's emails sent suddenly to unguarded minds.
