Sept. 02--An Ocean Isle Beach resort will get some big-time exposure in February when a commercial that recently filmed there airs during the 2014 Super Bowl.
The Winds Beach Resort was selected by Durham-based production company Simple Syrup to double for a Caribbean resort in the ad for The Charlotte Metro Credit Union.
The commercial, which filmed Aug. 21-22, features a newlywed couple vacationing in an unspecified tropical location managing their expenses with Charlotte Metro's mobile banking.
Jessie Bailin, the producer of the commercial, said The Winds' tropical foliage was a big draw.
"The owner of the resort, Gary Pope, has planted a tropical garden with palm trees and luscious plants," Bailin said. "It felt like we could be anywhere but we were only three hours from Durham. Tropical USA."
Kimberly Duff, social marketing director for The Winds, was on hand for the filming and said the resort was glad to host the production.
"Everyone was really excited. We have never had anything like that happen at the resort before," Duff said. "All the guests were thrilled to see the production. Many of them even stood on their balconies to watch the filming below."
Duff said the crew allowed some guests to act as background extras and took time to show children the production process.
The commercial is the latest to be shot locally this year. In June, Planters Peanuts filmed a series of commercials at the Wilmington Convention Center. Kellogg's filmed an ad for its Krave cereal bars on Front Street in March.
The brief increase in commercials produced in the area is an anomaly, said Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Film Commission.
"We don't do huge commercial business. It is very much sporadic for the area," he said. "Plus, we don't do much to recruit it. We have tried before but it is a tough market to attract. It is a different market than the film and TV market."
The commercial shot at The Winds is being edited and will air on North Carolina affiliates during the big game Feb. 2.
