Commotion is an innovative open source communications toolkit of software, documentation, and training materials that strengthens communities by allowing them to build their own local communications infrastructures. The Commotion software platform uses routers, laptops, mobile phones, and other Wi-Fi devices to create decentralized, wireless mesh networks: Commotion interconnects devices directly to one-another in a peer-to-peer manner to form a "spider web" of connectivity.
"People are using Commotion to share resources, communicate with each other, and build local applications that support their local needs," said
Commotion DR2 adds extensive usability enhancements and features to reduce the difficulty of network maintenance. At a time of increased awareness about government surveillance, Commotion has been strengthening network security and has an open call for additional support for these endeavors. Commotion DR2 includes initial dashboard integration support for network management and troubleshooting. Among the other new technical features in DR2 are support for translation to local languages, secure administration support, and support for additional local applications. These features are fully compatible with previous releases and are being ported to the Android, Linux, Windows, and OS X clients over the next quarter.
Commotion development continues in tandem with on-the-ground work, helping ensure that the tools are applicable to a broad range of situations and usable by people with varying levels of technical expertise. OTI will be publishing a Commotion Construction Kit training and self-guided learning modules by the end of the year. These materials, much like the software, were developed in collaboration with communities in
Commotion DR2 is available for testing and feedback, available on the project website: www.commotionwireless.net. Please note that Commotion is in Beta and should not be used for mission-critical or sensitive communications until version 1.0 is released.
