Music lecture in Vineland
What Is It: Paul Mack Somers commemorates the death of Don Carlo Gesualdo with a lecture tonight at the Vineland Public Library and Thursday at the Margate Public Library.
What To Expect: The music of Gesualdo, who lived from 1566 to 1613, reflected late-Renaissance decadence. He is remembered for writing intensely expressive madrigals and sacred music that use a chromatic language not heard again until the late 19th century. His music is among the most experimental and expressive of the Renaissance. He was forgotten after the Renaissance, and it was only in the 20th century that he was rediscovered. Somers is a composer, performer, founder of Maurice River Music and was for 25 years the harpsichordist for the Virtuoso Strings of New York.
Event Info: Somers' lectures will be held from 6 to 7:30 tonight in the Community Event Room of the Vineland Public Library, 1058 E. Landis Ave., Vineland and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Margate Public Library, 8100 Atlantic Ave., Margate.
