WEST CHICAGO, IL --(Marketwired - September 12, 2013) - Throughout the month of April, Sims Recycling Solutions, the global leader in electronics reuse and recycling held several collection events around the world in celebration of Earth Day, which was officially observed on Monday, April 22, 2013.
Sims organized international collection events in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, India, South Africa, Sweden and the Netherlands.
In the U.S., Sims held collection events in eight states including Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, Tennessee and Texas. Seven of these locations satisfactorily met GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSŪ standards for tracking the amount of electronics received during these events, and together, successfully broke a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the "most consumer electronics recycled within 24 hours at multiple venues."
These seven record-setting sites included events in California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey and Ontario. Sims was able to collect about 126,344 pounds of electronic waste for recycling, breaking the previous record of 80,000 pounds which was set by Sims last Earth Day.
"In the U.S. we are tossing over 130 million cellphones in the trash every year and disposing of 17,000 tons of e-waste every day," stated Steve Skurnac, President, Sims Recycling Solutions. "Our goal this past Earth Day was to help provide convenient electronics recycling drop off locations across the nation. The fact that we were able to collect more electronic waste than last year, breaking our Guinness World Records achievement, tells me this was a success."
