Global nutrition company, Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE:HLF), announced that it has engaged former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to serve as a senior advisor to chairman and CEO Michael O. Johnson and the company's board of directors. Villaraigosa will provide counsel on strategic business development and global community outreach.
"Antonio knows our company well. He understands our nutrition products as well as the way our business model works and the value it can bring to communities," said Johnson. "His years of experience leading a major U.S. city give Antonio a unique understanding of the opportunities Herbalife can bring to people across the globe. His knowledge and perspective will be a valuable addition to our team."
Herbalife helps people pursue healthy, active lives and offers an entrepreneurial business opportunity to those interested in selling its products, which are available exclusively through its network of independent members.
"Herbalife has been a solid member of the Los Angeles business community and a strong presence within the Latino community since the company was founded here in 1980," said Villaraigosa. "During my time as mayor, Herbalife demonstrated its commitment to the city by choosing to locate its corporate offices in the LA Live complex and through its association with the LA Galaxy and the Herbalife LA Triathlon. I've long admired Herbalife's commitment to giving back to the community though their support of local organizations like the Union Rescue Mission, the LA Chapter of the Red Cross and the Los Angeles City Fellows Program. I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with the Herbalife leadership team to help the company continue to grow and contribute."
Antonio Villaraigosa served as the 41st Mayor of Los Angeles, California, from 2005 to 2013. Prior to being elected Mayor, he was a member of the California State Assembly from 1994 to 2000, the Democratic leader of the Assembly from 1996 to 1998, and the Speaker of the California State Assembly from 1998 to 2000. After leaving the State Assembly, due to term limits, he was elected to the Los Angeles City Council from 2003 until he was elected Mayor in 2005.
