NORTH SAANICH, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/29/13 -- Today, the Honourable John Duncan, Minister of State and Chief Government Whip and Member of Parliament for Vancouver Island North, on behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced support for the Capital Regional District under the Harper Government's Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

"Our Government is pleased to support improvements to the Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich," said Minister Duncan. "All Canadians will benefit from our Government's continued investment in communities across the country. These investments will boost economic activity, while leaving a lasting legacy of modernized community spaces for future generations."

The Harper Government invested $177, 900 to upgrade the Panorama Recreation Centre fire protection system by installing a new fire suppression sprinkler system.

"By receiving the CIIF funding, important improvements to this community asset will be completed much sooner than expected," said Ron Rieberger, Manager of Facilities & Operations. "Every visitor to Panorama, from the community and beyond, will now benefit from the safety provided by having proper fire sprinkler protection in all areas of the facility."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government announced further support to help communities across the country modernize their infrastructure. Our Government committed $150 million over two years for the Fund. The Fund supports projects that look to improve existing community infrastructure accessible for use by the public, such as community centres, recreational buildings, local arenas, cultural and other community facilities.

Since 2006, the Harper Government, through WD, has invested in job-creating small- and medium-sized businesses, aerospace, marine and defence industries, and supported innovative entrepreneurs in pursuing emerging markets. By continuing to promote new economic opportunities, WD is helping to create jobs, economic growth, and long-term prosperity.
