Aug. 27--ASHLAND -- Free ice cream and live music will be among the highlights of Ashland's annual Laborfest celebration on Sept. 2 at the bandstand in Central Park.
The annual celebration, hosted by the city of Ashland with the Ashland Recreation Department, is set to begin at 3 p.m. The event will be an ice cream social with live performances from the bandstand, with Mayor Chuck Charles on hand to welcome guests.
The day's entertainment will begin at 3:15 p.m. with a performance by Outrider, made up of musicians Ish Stevens, Jesse Waddell and Justin Butler. Following Outrider will be a performance by Eddie and the Cougars shortly after 4 p.m. Vocalist and band leader Eddie Riffe said the show will include a rare appearance by guitarist Tal Callihan, who will be joining himself and bassist Jeff Lewis, drummer "Kentucky-John" Hall, guitarist "Texas Dave" Jaquez, along with an unidentified harmonica player for a set dedicated to the working men and women of the region.
"It's a privilege anytime we get to play downtown Ashland on the bandstand at Central Park. It's good to take one day a year to honor the working man, and we're just honored to be there," Riffe said, adding his personal endorsement for the day's headliner, John Thornsberry.
"John Thornsberry is a great talent -- a super voice," he said. "Do yourself a favor and come check him out, and come check us out while you're down there!"
Laborfest, "a tribute to the working people of America," will also feature door prizes; cotton candy by Sweet & Sassy Treats; Peanuts the clown creating balloon art; bean bag toss; face painting and other family oriented activities.
The invocation for the annual Laborfest will be Dr. I.W Stevens of Fairview Baptist Church, and the pledge of allegiance will be led by Amvets member Mike Wurts. Participants are reminded to bring lawn chairs.
