Aug. 25--From the moment it starts raining men and three divas descend from the heavens, you know that Priscilla Queen of the Desert is going to be a wild ride.
How can you top three outrageous drag queens driving across the Australian desert in a neon pink bus? With feathers, glitter and a whole lot of sequins, of course.
The show, performed in the historic Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, tells the story of three friends who travel across the outback in an old bus on a mission to headline a show in a casino.
The rundown jalopy of a tour bus christened Priscillia Queen of the Desert turns out to be one of the main stars of the shows. Transformed from a drab, gray set of wheels, the bus becomes a colorful, LED covered, integral part of the show in which most of the production engulfs being in, around or on top of.
The main characters, Tick, also known as Mitzi played by Wade McCollum, Bernadette played by Scott Willis and Bryan West as Adam who goes by Felicia when is costume, trek out across the desert searching for love and friendship and end up finding unexpected adventures along the way.
Though almost all of the characters in "Priscilla" find a way to stand out on their own, there is a supporting performance that needs a special spotlight. Priscillia opens in a drag show at a downtown Sydney lounge hosted by Miss Understanding, played by Nik Alexzander. In a quick change Alexzander goes from bubbly host to a gyrating, somewhat manic, Tina Turner lip sync that is laugh-out-loud funny and sets the tone of what is expected for the rest of the night.
One might be able to do without some of the annoying cat calls coming from the audience at inappropriate times, but it probably should be expected at a show about drag queens in San Francisco with a crowd that was 80 percent men.
From 'I Will Survive' to 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' the music compliments the over 500 flashy costumes that deliver an amazing, over the top adventure that will have you saying WOW! more times than you can count.
