Aug. 23--JOPLIN, Mo. -- Need an excuse to don some fishnets and high heels this weekend?
Auditions for "Rocky Horror Show" will be held at 10 p.m. today and Saturday at Joplin Little Theatre, 3009 W. First St.
That may seem an unusual time for open auditions, but the production of the cult hit isn't your average show, said director Lisa Wood.
"This will be an after-hours show, with a different kind of audience," she said. "This isn't part of the regular JLT season."
The creative director and designer for JLT, Wood said the late-night production is one that she has wanted to stage for a number of years.
The musical (which spawned a cult film in 1975) pays tribute to sci-fi and horror films through the tale of Brad and Janet, an engaged couple who seek shelter from a storm in the castle of Dr. Frank N. Furter, a cross-dressing mad scientist.
Wood said there are 15 speaking roles for the production, but there will be plenty of room for others in group and dance scenes. Those planning to audition should be prepared for some singing and dancing, and are encouraged to come in costume if they would like.
"I think it would be hilarious," she said. "It would be kind of an icebreaker, as it can be an awkward show to audition for if you're not ready for that kind of craziness. It could help everyone get comfortable. We want a laid-back atmosphere where people can be comfortable enough to be silly."
That atmosphere will extend to the actual production, which is set for Oct. 25-26. Audience interaction will be a large part of the show, she said.
"Costumes are encouraged, audience members will be pulled up on stage and there will be prop bags," said Wood. "It's going to be a blast."
The show will be staged through Wood's own company, Whitewood Productions, with proceeds from ticket sales benefiting JLT. There are no age restrictions, but Wood said that people should be mindful of the fact that the show contains mature subject matter.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at http://joplinlittletheatre.org or by calling the box office, 417-623-3638. Tickets are also on sale for the Joplin Little Theatre production of "Gypsy," which will be presented Sept. 25-29.
