In any hospital, doctor's office, and other medical facility, chances are that there are a number of computerized, electronic equipment needed to monitor an array of things from a patient's blood pressure to their vitals during an emergency medical procedure. Like any technology-dependent field, the machines that coincide with procedures need to be maintained and repaired. This Fall,
Biomedical clinical equipment technicians are essential to the medical field. Technicians must have the skills necessary to repair and replace, test and calibrate, perform preventative maintenance, and facilitate training sessions on medical equipment such as patient monitors, defibrillators, medical imaging equipment, and more.
"In our discussions with our program's advisory committee and researching job demand, there is an immediate need for biomedical equipment technicians throughout the city and state," said
Technology continues to change quickly in the medical equipment field, and
"These students will have more of an edge after completing the program, since they are receiving direct training specifically for the biomedical field," said
With so much emphasis on electronics and computers, Barsch adds that the training the program provides is easily transferable both inside and outside the field. "Computers are in just about everything now. A lot of the eletronics training, for things like microprocessors and microcontrolers, applies to so many things, so these skills are not just limited to the medical field. This program will allow students to get the training they need to start their career in the biomedical field, but then as they progress in the industry, there are an array of machines and equipment you can specialize in as a technician. It is definitely a diverse field to get into."
As technology and the medical industry evolves, technicians may end up playing a larger role in both their successes. "Emphasis is going to change in medicine," said Barsch. "What's going to make hospitals survive is how much money they can save on their machine maintenance, which is where we as technicians come in."
