Aug. 03--Winner of two Drama Desk awards and a Theater World Award, "All Shook Up" brings the tunes of Elvis Presley to DeLand's Athens Theatre this Thursday, Aug. 8.
The 2004 musical is loosely based on William Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night," but uses Elvis's music to propel the story. A mysterious, leather-jacketed, guitar-playing, hip-swiveling stranger shakes up a small Midwestern town during the 1950s. The songs include classics such as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Jailhouse Rock" and "Don't Be Cruel."
Trevor Southworth is directing "All Shook Up." Central Floridians may remember him from his years performing with Seaside Musical Theater in Daytona Beach. An Actors Equity member, Southworth has recently returned from New York City.
Chris Endsley is music director, and Kim Ball is choreographer for the production. That team worked on "Hairspray" and "Scrooge" in the Athens' last season.
"It has been a huge honor to be able to have a director, music director, and choreographer with professional resumes to come work with us here in Volusia County," said Craig Uppercue, artistic director of Sands Theater Company, which produces the shows at the Athens. "Directors of this caliber are amazing to work with and bring with them many years of knowledge and success."
In the cast are Angel Lozada (Link in the Athens' "Hairspray"), Bella Muller and Chloe Robin, who have had major roles at the Orlando Repertory Theatre, and DaVid McCarthy, who played Ursula in the Athens' "Little Mermaid" and Edna in "Hairspray."
Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Thursdays-Fridays, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays, 2:30 p.m. Sundays, through Aug. 18.
Tickets are $22-$27; $19 seniors; $10 students. Go to AthensDeLand.com or call 386-736-1500.
The Athens Theater is at 124 N. Florida Ave., DeLand.
"All Shook Up" is sponsored in part by the Cultural Council of Volusia County and Krewe of Amalee, as well as other area businesses.
