Aug. 15--Frankie & the Poolboys
"The Adventures of Cap'n Coconuts"
This is the highly entertaining second album from an instrumental ensemble headed by lead guitarist Ferenc Dobronyi, a teacher at Marin Primary and Middle School in Larkspur.
Frankie and the Poolboys evolved from Pollo Del Mar, a psychedelic surf band that Dobronyi played in for 16 years. This album was allegedly inspired by a 1960s TV show starring a NASA space chimp that critics purportedly decided was "dumber than 'I Dream of Jeanie.'"
Dobronyi seems to be the only one who remembers this bit of pop culture trivia. But no matter. There's nothing dumb about the musicianship and the sophisticated arrangements on this amusing and musical CD, featuring one cover and 13 originals heavily influenced by spaghetti western composer Ennio Morricone, the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, Marin's own Booker T and the classic TV theme songs Dobronyi remembers from his childhood. Even the ones that exist only in his imagination.
His band is loaded with some of Marin's finest musicians, including bassist Jason Jones of the Tom Finch Group, pianist Michael Wray of Johnny Vegas and the High Rollers, and Dobronyi's keyboardist wife, Karen, on loan from Meshugga Beach Party.
"The rest of the band is from the East Bay," Dobronyi confesses. "I hope you don't hold that against us."
Not at all. Even the cover illustrations by Norway's Fred Lammers are cool. And there's so much texture and detail and fascinating waves and swells on "Cap'n Coconuts" that you'll want to host a beach party just so you can play it for your friends.
