VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/03/13 -- Five Hole for Food (FHFF) sets off July 3 on its fourth road trip, which begins in St. John's, N.L., to tackle hunger. This year's 17-day tour will stop in 13 cities to play hockey for food. It will cover more than 11,000 kilometres and aims to collect the equivalent of 250,000 pounds of food in support of Canadian food banks.
"Our local food banks' needs for non-perishable goods are constantly increasing," explains Richard Loat, FHFF CEO and founder. "Every year, more than 10.8 million Canadians deal with hunger, year-round, no matter the season."
Loat had a dream four years ago to use hockey as a vehicle for social change. In 2010, the 24-year-old university student created FHFF and embarked on a road trip that saw him set up ball hockey rinks in nine Canadian cities and invite the public to come out and play.
Today, FHFF now organizes ball hockey games throughout the year, including recent events at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, the Beaver Cup in Ottawa, and Canada Day International in New York. Loat's infectious enthusiasm has grown FHFF to a team of 40-plus volunteers that's supported by national partners.
Canadians from coast-to-coast are invited this summer to participate in the free drop-in ball hockey games by simply bringing a hockey stick and a can of food or a cash donation for the food banks.
The 2013 epic road trip's schedule, starting in Newfoundland and ending in British Columbia, is as follows:
July 3: St. John's - George Street, 4 p.m.July 5: Halifax - Halifax Commons Oval, 3 p.m.July 6: Charlottetown - Charlottetown Event Grounds, noonJuly 7: Saint John - The East parking lot beside Harbour Station on Station Street, noonJuly 9: Montreal - Place du Canada, 4 p.m.July 10: Ottawa - Sparks Street, 11 a.m.July 11: Toronto - YD Square, 11 a.m.July 13: Winnipeg - Corydon Avenue at Cockburn Street, noonJuly 14: Regina - Scarth Street Mall, noonJuly 16: Calgary - Eau Claire Market, 2 p.m.July 17: Edmonton - Centennial Square, 4 p.m.July 19: Victoria - Saanich Plaza, 2 p.m.July 20: Vancouver - Granville Street, noon

"It is our responsibility to help those in need, and this is why the FHFF team is challenging Canadians across the country to play hockey for food. Help us take on our biggest challenge to date and raise 250,000 pounds of food to feed hungry Canadians."
