Have Pre-Diabetes? Start Dieting Now, Research Shows

If your doctor diagnoses you with pre-diabetes, start your diet immediately and stick with it.

In a new study, Johns Hopkins University researchers found dropping 10 percent of body weight within six months of such a diagnosis dramatically reduces the risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes in the next three years.

A Johns Hopkins news release quotes Nisa Maruthur, study leader and assistant professor of general internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine: "We have known for some time that the greater the weight loss, the lower your risk of diabetes," she says. "Now we understand that we can see much of the benefit of losing that weight in those first six months, when people are adjusting to a new way to eating and exercising," she says.

The study is published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine.
