Summer slowdown? Certainly not in the startup community. Here are a few of the events and classes heating up the calendar:

-- Startups on stage: Along with local events, opportunities to pitch in national and global competitions are increasing. On July 23, Startup World, a global competition of 36 cities, is coming to Venture Hive in Miami, and the winner will compete in the global competition in Silicon Valley. "Startup World is a chance to show that Miami startups can compete against the best internationally. Venture Hive is happy to convene the top talent in our community to show off what we've got," said Susan Amat, founder of Venture Hive. To apply to pitch, the deadline is Tuesday, so hurry. This opportunity follows close behind with the PayPal Battle Hack, a global hackathon of 10 cities including Miami, to find the world's best developers. South Florida's competition is Aug. 24 and 25, and our winner will compete for $100,000 in Silicon Valley for the world title. Sign up here: battlehack.org/miami

-- Bringing in the experts: Senzari and LAB Miami are teaming up to launch a Knowledge MIA series, which will bring in experts in entrepreneurship, engineering and science to share knowledge and lead hands-on exercises with attendees. The first one is set for July 27 with Marko Rodriguez, one of the world's leading experts in graph computing, said Demian Bellumio of Senzari. -- A focus on women in growth stage: The Commonwealth Institute, a nonprofit focused on helping women-led businesses, is launching The Accelerated Business Growth Forum, a 12-month program specifically designed for a small group of women entrepreneurs well on their way to building successful enterprises in South Florida. Topics will include financial planning, funding strategies, branding, measuring success and best practices for HR. The program will start about mid-August for selected entrepreneurs.
