The Orlando Repertory Theatre's seventh annual Family Theatre Festival, sponsored by Target, opens with the Rep's Youth Academy production of "Shrek the Musical" on Friday, July 19.
The main event of the festival, which runs through Aug. 4, takes place the weekend of July 27-28, with the free Party in the Park. Entertainment that weekend includes the Bari Koral Family Rock Band and "The Amazing Max and The Box of Interesting Things."
The Party in the Park runs from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday, July 28. Face painting, performance activities, balloon artists, games, dress-up, backstage tours and other entertainment-related events are on tap. Free tickets to the Bari Koral Family Rock Band and "The Amazing Max and the Box of Interesting Things" are distributed at the Info Tent, first-come, first-serve as soon as the party opens each day. (There are also a limited amount of reservations to these shows online, prior to the Party in the Park.)
Bari Koral has been called "Sheryl Crow for kids" by the New York Post. This summer, Koral is working on the first yoga show on television for children, based on her music.
Fresh from an off-Broadway run in New York, "The Amazing Max and The Box of Interesting Things" is a family magic show. Max Darwin makes objects appear out of thin air, and mixes comedy, juggling and audience participation with his magic.
"Shrek the Musical," as well as "The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Wonderful (and Her Dog!)," will also have performances during the Party in the Park, though they require paid admission.
"Shrek the Musical" is based on the film about an ogre looking for love in a land of fairy-tale misfits. Performances are at 7 p.m. Fridays, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays (except for July 28, when the show is at 3 p.m.), through Aug. 4. Tickets are $15.
"The Amazing Adventures of Dr. Wonderful (and Her Dog!)," a co-production with City Theatre of Miami, is a high-energy sci-fi musical mystery in which a super-sized star starts to disappear. Performances are 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 27; 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, July 28; 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3; and 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 4. Tickets are $10.
The Orlando Repertory Theatre is at 1001 E. Princeton St. in Orlando's Loch Haven Park. For more information, the complete schedule and tickets go to http://www.orlandorep.com or call 407-896-7365.
