July 10--STILLWATER, Okla. -- Children and adults will have the opportunity to learn about the history of film and what the industry entails as part of a movie workshop at the Stillwater Multi Arts Center Monday.
Oklahoma City resident Samantha Bryant, with 10 years experience in film and television, will teach the class. She has worked as a casting associate on "Deal or No Deal" when the show visited Oklahoma City and was a production assistant on a Weather Channel special about tornadoes.
"I have always loved film my whole life," she said. "My parents were very interested in films and didn't hold back when I was kid. For instance, I saw "12 Angry Men" when I was 10. It's still my favorite movie."
Bryant has a sister who lives in Stillwater, prompting her to offer the class locally to all ages.
"They're going to learn the history of film and a lot of the inventions that led to photography and film," she said.
Subject matter will include some early films and an overview of sound, lighting and film structure. While the class is focused on children, many adults are opting to take the class, too.
"I wanted (kids) to be able to be introduced to the world of film and look at it more deeply, other than, 'Oh it's a fun experience,'" Bryant said.
She hopes to present the industry in an academic manner.
"A lot of work went into (films), symbolism and there's more than meets the eye," she said.
Activities will include the creation of a fantascope, a zoetrope and a thaumatrope -- toys that give the illusion of moving pictures. The students will celebrate with snacks and a party on their last day with a final project completed in each student's method, which can include photos, video, posters or a report.
Bryant said she would like to offer an exclusive adult class, a screenwriting class, field trips and a class that would result in the creation of a film, if this workshop is successful.
There is still space to attend the workshop. Those interested may sign up through the Multi Arts Center. The cost is $45 with a $5 supply fee. For more information, contact Bryant at 405-473-8162.
