June 7, 2013

June 07--EDMOND -- Two Edmond students, part of a three-member team making a film in 2011, have brought home awards from the 2013 Trail Dance Festival recently, and the film will be showing at deadCENTER film festival this weekend in Oklahoma City.

Dancing in the Chamber won both the Best Short Drama and the Audience Choice awards at the Trail Dance film festival.

"We were excited and appreciative beyond words when accepting the awards," said Chris Butcher, an Edmond resident and a former student at the University of Central Oklahoma and film producer. Both Butcher and Austin Crawford, Santa Fe High School graduate and former student at UCO, was associate producer.

Oklahoma City Community College student Shawn Barfield wrote the screenplay and was executive producer and director of the film. Butcher is producing the film and Crawford is associate producer.

"Dancing in the Chamber" tells the story of one man's struggle for self-preservaiton and personal victory amidst the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp.

"The main character in the story finds a way to take his personal power back while in a death camp during World War II," Butcher said. "Before his death he realizes that he gets to decide how to feel about himself."

The 30-minute film is loosely based on a real story, and begins in a death camp, Barfield said.

The team used crowd-funding in part and a grant from the Jewish Federation of Oklahoma City to raise contributions for the project, Barfield said. The film was produced on Oklahoma City Community College's 6,000-square-foot sound stage.

deadCENTER times when the movie will be shown include 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Devon Auditorium; and 5 p.m. Sunday at Harkins Cinema 3.
