Singer Miley Cyrus' latest video has already got 27 million views online,
courtesy all the 'Twerking' it involves. Twe-what, you say? Twerking, which is a
combination of 'twisting' and 'jerking' your booty, is the latest dance trend to
This seductive dance and great workout routine for your glutes, hips and thighs has caught the fancy of international artistes like Britney Spears, Amanda Bynes and the One Direction band. The Twerking communities on social and micro-blogging sites too are piling up likes and members by the hour.
Fitness experts tout it as a fun routine that can be included in dance workout sessions. And workout aside, if you master the Twerking techniques, you can possibly win the best dancer in the club badge!
Dance and fashion choreographer Swapniel Desai says, "This would make for a fun group dance session, particularly for the girls. I will definitely be working on including this in one of my dance workout classes as it's also good toning for the core, thighs and glutes."
Fitness professional Tushar Ramanan adds, "Certain techniques of Twerking can be included to bring in a change in one's workout and to add a dash of fun to one's routine. I don't know how many women will take to it as it is a bit erotic but then it totally depends on how a trainer incorporates it. It's all about lower body movement and flexibility."
And while you can Twerk to just about any song, the DJs say it's hip-hop and RnB that would work the best. DJ Avneet Sawhney aka Sonu says, "Everyone is talking about it and I'm quite sure some gyms would incorporate this in its sessions. It's a seductive dance form and would definitely win points with the partygoers here." Its exoticness will appeal to the girls, he says. "The girls here know how to have fun so I'm sure this is going to pick up at our clubs."
But is this here to stay or just a trend that will eventually be replaced by a quirkier one? Mumbai-based fitness expert Shilpa Rane, who has also been teaching pole fitness for the last six years, says, "It's a part of hip-hop dancing and I really doubt that it will take off or stay permanently. It's more of a fad like dub-step, Harlem Shake, Prancercise. Twerking is essentially part of the African dance. In fact, in Shortcut Romeo, they've featured some African dancers in a song and one of them is Twerking in it. They do it so well because they have rounded butts! I doubt anyone here will be able to do it like them. Zumba caught on well because everybody can do it, but the ballet workout is not for everyone. Similarly, Twerking is not for everyone."
