TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 06/28/13 -- Treasurer Thomas G. Conway has been elected by acclamation for a second term as head of The Law Society of Upper Canada, the governing body for Ontario's lawyers and paralegals.
"It's a great honour to be acclaimed by my fellow benchers once again as Treasurer and I am grateful for their support," says Treasurer Conway. "The Law Society has a critical role to play in enhancing access to justice for the people of Ontario, and we will continue to build on the work that has been done so far. Equal access for all is more important than ever, as we see increasing numbers of people opting for self-representation in the courts - not because they want to - but because financially, they have no other option."
During his first term, Treasurer Conway established the Treasurer's Advisory Group (TAG), composed of organizations working in the access to justice field. TAG meets regularly and explores options and opportunities for the Law Society to take an enhanced role on access to justice issues.
He has also travelled throughout the province to meet with lawyers and paralegals and discuss issues facing the profession, including the Pathways pilot project, which will allow lawyer licensing candidates to either article or complete a Law Practice Program, starting in the 2014-15 licensing year.
Treasurer Conway was first elected as a bencher of the Law Society in 2007, and was re-elected in 2011. He has served on a number of committees and was co-chair of the Retention of Women in Private Practice Working Group, which developed ground-breaking initiatives to support women in the legal profession.
He served as chair of the Professional Development and Competence Committee, chair of the Inter-Jurisdictional Mobility Committee and chair of the Articling Task Force. He was also a vice president and president elect of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada in 2012 and 2013.
Treasurer Conway has practised civil litigation in Ottawa since his call to the Bar in 1989 and is currently a partner at Cavanagh LLP. He has extensive civil trial and appellate experience, acting as counsel in jury and non-jury trials in the Superior Court of Ontario, in the Ontario Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, the Tax Court of Canada, and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Since 2010, Treasurer Conway has been named as one of Canada's top lawyers in the area of corporate and commercial litigation in the peer review list Best Lawyers® in Canada.
The Law Society of Upper Canada regulates Ontario's lawyers and paralegals in the public interest ensuring that every individual who practises law or provides legal services in Ontario meets standards of learning, professional competence and professional conduct that are appropriate for the legal services provided.
